Course Description

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is reaching epidemic levels in our society. DM represents a failure of the beta cells in the pancreas to produce sufficient levels of the hormone insulin. Insulin is responsible for allowing sugars to enter cells and provide energy needed for daily life. Failure of sugars to pass into cells results in a build up in the blood stream which has multiple negative effects on the body. The lectures are designed to foster an understanding of what DM is, the consequences and what is available to combat this health menace.
